| In the 1970s a number of good vintages resulted in an increase in demand for the sweet white wine of Bordeaux and a growing realisation that even the little-known chateaux could produce lovely wines in a good year. Unique, expensive methods of production, the decline of lavish multi-course meals and the rise of appreciation of dry white wines had all contributed to the recent neglect.
In the ten years since the publication of Sauternes this increase in interest and demand has grown considerably so that these wines nopw command a fair price and the economic situation in the area is more stable. There has been a number of exciting changes and the authors have had the oppurtunity extensively to rewrite, amplify and update their original text in this new edition.
Every major chateau producing sweet white wine and all the surprisingly numerous lesser properties are listed. The names of present and past owners, the extene of estates , the proportion of grape varieties grown and the yields are given, and different methods of production discussed.
This book also contains a list of tasting notes on vintages from 1890 to 1989 drawn frrom the authors' notes and those of other eminent men of wine, and a section on gastronomy.
Many colour and black-and-white illustrations and several maps show the reader something of the region which produces these remarkable wines. |
